So I decided to get a DSLR Camera

After reading all the posts on Nikon vs Canon and all your suggestions.
I decided on the D40, but where do you guys go for the deals?

That and how is the kit lens on that?
I do want to upgrade the lens soon, but what do you guys recommend?
I know there are a lot of variables.. I will be taking still shots for the most part and no need for a flash either.

Budget is important too.. lets say $300-$400 for a general use lens?
Is that a good range or do I have to step it up some?

THANKS!!

Adorama.com or bhphotovideo.com

For a general use lens, either stay with the kit lens (great) or pick up an 18-70 or 18-135 for that price range.

Spare battery (can't take cool pictures with a dead battery):

This actually looks like a good setup:

D40 + 18/135 for $690

Here's some more info on those lenses:

Feel free to shoot me any questions on that D40, I've already snapped over 10,000 exposures since I bought it this spring, I'm taking pictures of anything that moves. Or doesn't move.

The remote shutter is awesome... it's the only way I can shoot right now since my right hand is out of commission for the moment.

Extra battery is always a good thing to have but the D40x seems to last forever on one change (I avoid flash out od habit though... not sure how it hold up to flash usage though)

Good choice. Enjoy and share.

Yeah, the battery lasts forever with the kit lens, but since I've moved to the 18-200 VR, whenever using the VR a lot the battery gets chewed up much faster.

BTW, I'm assuming you have picked the D40 over the D40x?

Well I havent gotten it yet... just narrowed it down to the D40.
My cousin is a Authorized Nikon tech and he is going to let me borrow his D70 for a bit to play with and see how I like it. Then he is going to check what they might have to sell me as refurbished. But that is very hard to come by, he hooked me up with a Nikon coolpix 7900 (pocket digital camera) I think its 7.1 megapixels and that was only a $100.00 but I had to wait 7 months before one came in.

Best thing is.. if it breaks, he just fixes them for me!
Thats why I am only looking at Nikons, I just dont want to gamble and wait to see if he can find me a refurbished DSLR. I can't do another 7 months

Get the D70 over teh 40. Better choices for lenses since Nikon didnt put a focus drive motor in the 40/40x like every other nikon AF SLR camera they ever made.

That's a good point... DX lenses are fairly limited at the moment but that kind of depends on how indepth you plan on getting with photography.

His original post says he already read all the other posts here where we beat that, and other topics, into the ground. I'm also assuming he choose the D40 over the D40x based on the same research. Good call, IMO.

I know nothing about cameras...I just wanted to point that out.

We should do a Nikon day when the leaves start to change colors. Just go out for a ride somewhere like St Charles and take photos of the town and stuff.

Kettle Morraine would be better since theres a chance you'll see more than 3 trees in a group.
