Tonight's Moon 10/2007

I went out and bought a tripod and remote switch today. Here is my first picture utilizing the tripod and remote. Comments and criticism welcome, I can use all the help I can get, I've only been doing this for two weeks, lol.

Not bad. I can never seem to get a good shot, theres always houses in my way out here when it's low enough to get a large image of it.

HDTony.... Damn glad to meet you!

Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.

Off topic I'm sorry but where'd you get your remote? I'm to lazy to order online and no one has them in stock.

What were your camera settings? Looks pretty good but maybe a lower aperture setting to increase DOF?

Please don't tell me that you think the moon is bigger when it's closer to the horizon

You can get just as good a photo when it's high in the sky.

Is that enlarged? The edges are quite soft.

Here's handheld with only a 200mm lens:

The moon is always the same size. It is the forced perspective that the moon on the horizon gives you.

Tips for shooting them moon.

Try to get over 500mm in lens length, even if it takes a 2X Teleconverter.

You really need 1000mm to do it right.

To keep the camera/tripod setup steady, get yourself some 1 gallon ziplock bags and fill them 1/2 to 3/4 full of sand and gently lay it on the camera/tripod setup to keep the wind from waggling the lens (this is why the edges of your moon look blurred).

Also, some good tripods have a hook hanging from the bottom of the pedistal, hang your camera bag or another sand bag from this hook for extra stability.

Mass = stability when you are doing long shutter times with long lenses.

+1 That's on par with something Bush or Jessica Simpson would say.

"includes 10 used-car dealers or auto repair shops, 11 liquor stores and bars--two of which advertise lingerie fashion shows and a third billed as a "gentlemen's club"--three cut-rate motels and one trailer park. The squat, brick municipal building is next to a currency exchange and a few steps from an adult video store. The bars open at 10 a.m. and close at 6:30 a.m."
