Is this good for me? (I know nothing)

"Canon D300 DSLR.

Includes:
-Digital Optics 0.5x wide angle conversion lens w/ macro lens
-1gb SanDisk Ultra II memory card
-2gb SanDisk Ultra II mem card (never used)
-4 batteries
-Large Canon bag (used once)
-Original box with all the original software (never used) and cables (never used), manuals, strap (never used), charger, etc.

I purchased this camera brand new from Circuit City ($950) along with a 2 year warranty ($80). I had the camera cleaned/inspected every 6-months.

Not a single mark on the LCD or the lens. On a scale from 1-10 I would rate the condition of the camera a 9.5... and that's only because I've used it

$450 TYD includes shipping and PP fees."

First off, I don't know anything about cameras at all. I am looking at getting a camera for the girlfriend to use at trackdays to take quality close-up photos with. I need one that can take a full frame picture of a bike in motion from 50-80 yards or so. I don't mind buying another lens, but I was wondering if this is a pretty decent deal for what I'm trying to do. I'm not worried about my GF figuring it out since she is much smarter when it comes to electronic dodads. I basically want to take some quality pictures like the ones I see here, at the track. Sorry to sound retarded, but I know nothing about cameras and if this is a good deal, I would like to jump on it.

Just be careful ordering camera equipment from ebay. There are a few shady ass dealers from NY selling stuff on ebay.

It's not from Ebay, but from another busa forum. The guy selling it is the Moderator and is a standup guy.

If it were me, I wouldn't buy that camera.

$450 for a used Canon Digital Rebel (300D) is WAAAAAAAYYYYYY to much money. All the other stuff in the listing is junk too.

Memory cards are dirt cheap, camera bags are cheap, batteries for the camera are cheap....

I would walk away.

If you want a Canon DSLR, then I would recommend at least the Rebel XT (350D) (read... better than the 300D). You can get one brand new, with the standard 18-55 kit lens, for $497.87 at Amazon.com. The Rebel XTi (400D) is 666.26 for the kit. The XTi has a much better focusing system in it and will give you more "keepers" than the XT will.

Of course this will not get you the results you want. You will need a telephoto lens to get enough zoom to get the full frame photos you want, from the distance you want. For the distance you are looking at, a minimum telephoto lens of 300mm is required. Those can be had fairly cheaply (~$170) but you will need to add this to the price of the camera.

I'm going to stop there because this photography thing has a lot more to it, but I don't want to scare you away before you even get started.

That's the kind of info I was looking for. I don't want to become an amature photographer, but I do want a good deal on what I do buy. I am going to get it as a Christmas gift for the girlfriend. (who knows, she might become an amature photographer) I know I will have to get another lens in the $1G range, but that will be a little later when I can upgrade.
Should I not buy this at all, or should I ask if he would take less money?

Personally, I would just buy new. Try Calumet, Helix or even Wolf/Ritz chain.

Ritz/Wolf has the XT with 18-55 lens for $550, XTi for $700 with same.

Calumet has the XTi with 18-55 and 70-300 for $900

Go to a camera store and play around with a bunch of them.

With this requirement the lens is going to be a more important (and expensive) purchase then the camera body itself. The kit 18-55 lens isn't going to do squat for that.

Here's your 50-80 yards with a 55mm lens at full zoom:

Shooting from the same location with a 200mm lens at full zoom:

And again with 420mm:

A good 300mm lens is going to be the bare minimum and will cost more than the camera, battery, memory card, case, etc all together.

That's my next move. I didn't want to go into a store like a complete moron and have some 17yr old kid tell me what he thinks I want. I'd rather talk to people who know something to get a ballpark idea of what is good.

I bought my camera and mem cards from them. Good service and they're the cheapest I've found on camera related stuff.
