D80 Not Saving Pictures

I'm hoping with the knowledge of camera users on this site, someone might be able to help because I'm drawing blanks from the interweb.

My D80 isn't saving any pictures. Everything internally happens in the camera, but when the LCD pops up for review, no picture is there. It used to be the last picture of my chameleon would pop up, but the 20 other pictures I've tried afterward aren't being saved to the memory card.

Here's what I've tried to do:

1. 2 other Nikon approved cards and 1 not Nikon approved card (Kingston branded), all wiped clean and formatted in the camera.

2. I followed pg 129 of the manual for doing a hard reset.

3. I tried reloading the 1.01 firmware onto the camera.

This problem happened when my dad had the camera, and all he did was upgrade the firmware to 1.01 and it worked fine. I have no idea why it isn't working now. I've had the camera for a few months and have shot 1000 or so pictures.

Here's the icing on the cake. My dad bought the camera, went to register it and found out he bought a gray market camera, so he gave it to me. This means I can't bring it into a Nikon store to have fixed under warranty. I'd like to try to fix it myself before resorting to paying someone to do it.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I posted this on Nikonians as well. Dpreview won't let me register without an ISP email account and someother digital camera forum won't let me register with a gmail account.

Sounds like a symptom of the BLOD that plagued early model D70's.

Did you do the 2 button hard reset or the one under teh bottom of the camera?

Jsut thought of something. Did you install both A & B 1.01 firmware update?

Heres something to try. Even listed in teh owners manual. Under teh connector cover (where you hook up the USB and video cords) theres a reset button. try this. It will reset everythign to original out of the box settings. Dont know if it will revert to the original firmware though.

I did the hard reset explained the manual. The button is under the connector cover. I know it reset because the CLOCK icon is flashing in the display. It didn't reset the firmware though as it is still displaying A and B as 1.01.

I was going to try reseting the firmware again after doing another reset and hoping it will work this time. Stupid gray market cameras.

Any idea how to get it out of this or check if it's in it? I wasn't messing with any settings when it happened. Went from snapping pictures of the chameleon to taking a picture of the dogs, went to review the picture, and it was still the chameleon.

Do you have the "extended" options or whatever opened up? It's an option somewhere in the settings, I'm sooooooooo rusty now it's not even funny.

But the fact that that you were shooting one moment and the next it doesn't work makes me thinks that it might not be demo mode, though easy fix worth checking.

I couldn't find demo mode anywhere in the menus. I sounds like that could be it, but like you said, since I was in the middle of taking pictures and literally, didn't touch anything but the shutter on the camera, it would be weird for it to kick into demo mode.

When I reloaded the firmware, I found a site the hosted it since I can't get it off of Nikonusas site do to an invalid serial number. I went to my parents house and downloaded the firmware via my dad's serial number, tried a hard reset, reformatted the SD card in camera and reflash the firmware. Still nothing. I'm stumped. I even tried yelling at it and considered chucking it across the room. This sucks, I just got a SB800 and can't even use it now

I take it you have a gray market Nikon? Call up Nikon anyway. They are really good with support and repairs. After my bulldog chewed up my D70s, I sent my camera in for service and got it back within a week. Only cost was my shipping to them.

Damn it. The technician I spoke with had never heard of a problem like this before. I have to drive to Morton Grove to drop it off at a service center. Never mentioned it was gray market either. Damn, this better not be expensive.
