Brian if you plan on having any fun, bring a simple point and shoot. My dad used to always bring his camera gear and he was always worried about it being taken. He wouldn't let the stuff get out of arms reach. Unless your going to Cancun for serious photo shooting (not girls gone wild type) bring something simple.

geo speaks the truth. I've travelled extensively with a mere Canon SD500 (the size of a pack of cigarettes) and had a BLAST. It fits in pocket(or clips to belt) and you totally forget about it. Each night, you can delete the crappy photos and recharge the battery and then you've got all day no-worries shooting.

I took my D70 to the UK and had no issues. Its all about getting a bag for it that does not look like a touristy camera bag that they know has some $1000 hawkable camera in it.

I take my D70s everywhere I go. The toughest part I have is keeping the camera clean. Certain countries are very dirty, causing lots of dust buildup. In SE Asia I had a lot of problems with humidity and dust, to the point where things froze from being caked up from dirt. But it's part of the game. I didn't buy it to be a paperweight.

Definitely bring some canned compressed air and other cleaning supplies.

+1 on the humidity we ran into troubles in Mexico with the humidity levels. Some pictures turned out foggy due to the climate.
