Official Photo Contest #3

R U L E S:
- The host gives you a topic of interest and you get going. You post ONE image (only first image by one person will be judged) that is relevant to the challenger theme. You can change your image as many times as you like before the deadline.
- The host chooses a winner *AND* runner-up after closing. The decision of the judge (the Host!) is final. The judge is *not* eligible. The winner then chooses the next topic, tells everyone when the photo's must be posted by (give some reasonable amount of time like a week), runs the challenge, judges the winner and passes on the baton to that person. Winner/Host, please post a reasonable topic that someone who's not a pro photographer can be a part of. Remember it's not just cool shots, but the story that can be told for some.
- If the winner fails to post a new challenge within 48 hours of being declared the winner then the runner-up should post the new challenge within a further 24 hours.
- Any picture you've taken is eligible regardless of time taken and camera it was taken with. You can do all the post processing you want. However, it is most helpful if you list your camera, lens and exposure info along with your photo.
- All levels welcome. If you don't have the best lens or just a plain old pocket camera but your shot tells a wonderful story then there's no reason you can't win! This is about overall photo's and their story, not just about expensive equipment.
- Feel free to comment on other contestant's images. If you want someone to leave you a piece of constructive criticism, ask for it...after all we are here to learn too and practice.
- Provide any additional information concerning your entry you want. Explaining how the shot might relate to the topic could help too.
- Winner/Host, please copy and paste these rules into the topic and thread that you post because some might start doing contests later and miss the first one.

-New Rule, no camera phone pictures. This is an artistic contest and nothing about a camera phone shows good composition or technique.

Week #2 Topic
New topic, new boundaries. This week I am looking for "water shots". I prefer to see your best picture that involves interesting composition or creative use of shutter speed. All states of water is acceptable, interesting ice formation, strange steam behavior.

Due Date: 3/9/2008

So go out there and try to view the subject matter with a different eye. You might have lie down in the prone position to get the best shot.

Ian

This is a pic of Modern Ice that was taken just last weekend with my XTi. Not too sure what settings, but it was probably in just Auto mode...

It's a bit grainy but it's 5 girls all 5 years old. This was taken on a class trip to the zoo. That's a sea turtle tank they are in awe of.

Here's one I took at friends house who had a huge Canadian flag hanging on the wall. I used my wifes Canon SD600 Elph camera. I have no idea what the settings were.

Got some pm's so figured I'd post up how it was done. I meant to redo it since it was done with my old point and shoot Panasonic.

The water is landing on a cookie/pizza tray and I turned on all the lights I could find in the kitchen and brought in a couple extra lamps to go with an even faster shutter speed. I took a wet paper towel and held it up in one hand, the camera was on a tripod and preset focus on the tray in a general area. Then it was simply timing. Let a drop go, give it a shot, let a drop go, give it a shot. Repeat about 75 times, then I got maybe a few usable shots out of all those. There is some cropping, here's uncropped:

And yes at least for me it was literally timing it...one drop is one push of the shutter. You don't even look at the shot you just took. Just do about 15 and then adjust. But the thing with photography is that a shot like that is difficult if you have no idea what you want. Once you can see it in your mind and understand it a bit, then getting a shot like that doesn't take long at all.

I can't keep this up. I didn't take that picture, I found it online and thought it was cool, so I posted it..

I guess here come my first negative rep points.

Yeah, I was about to call shenanigans on that one. No way a photo with that shallow a DOF came from a little Elph camera. I have an SD630, and granted it will take some great outdoor shots, that image it can not produce.
