Was this too harsh?

For those who don't know I'm going to school online. In a discussion board one of my fellow students posted the attached as their submission for a "collage" assignment. and this as their reasoning.
Quote:
In my project, I wanted to portray something with motion in it, & the original idea I had wasn't working out so I chose a picture that I already had, which worked out better anyway. This picture is called "God's Hand's". When I look at it, it shows me how God's hands appear to be reaching down out of the clouds to gather us close to him. so I guess you can say that my picture portrays love, motion & comfort.
My response was...
Quote:
Just wondering what work you did on this picture?

Kind of a dick move by my part but I'm busting my ass and have a 99.41% in the class. I don't see why I should let someone should steal peoples work (which has happened to me before, which is why most of my pics are tagged now)

I take it it is a photo class.

You make your bones on copy write He should be bounce from the class if he is taking credit for the work of others.

Good move on your part. Why one would steal something like that, that can be found on the Internet in an online class we'll never know. They had to know they were going to get caught!

Actually the kid admitted that he did not take a picture - read the original post again - it says that he tried to take a picture, but could not come up with anything better than this pic he already had. Nowhere he says that he took this picture. It is nicely worded to leave an impression that it was indeed his pic, but it doesn't say so anywhere.

I'm guessing the assignment is to submit your own work. He said "so I chose a picture that I already had," which to me says he is claiming it's his picture he snapped.

At least that's how I read it.

+1

No other classes allow plagiarism, so I don't see how he could think using someone else's photo would count for any credit.

Had a kid in 10th grade english I outed for plagerism (he was in a different class period). We were supposed to write a short story. Well the teacher read his story to our class. Well it was word for word a copy of Charlie Daniels Band's "Legend of the Wooley Swamp". Brought the album (with lyrics sleeve) in the next day and showed the teacher. Let the teacher borrow it for the next day and he played the song for the class the kid was in and put the kid in teh ht seat and made him explain why everyone else had to write their own story and he copied someone elses work.

We were allowed to use things that we found but there was supposed to be fairly substantial PS work done to it anyway as part of the assignment.
