Need help getting a camera for landscape shots..

I'm in Kentucky right now, and tomorrow we'll be at the great smoky mountains, and then into some national parks after that, but i dont have a camera!

I've heard the Elph is good for landscape shots (from another thread), but why is it better than something like a canon powershot which has better optical zoom with the same amount of megapixals? (sorry, I know nothing about cameras and all the features of them..not much time to research lol)

about 90% of the time it will be used for landscape shots, so whatever camera is best suited to that, I would be looking for. Price range is pretty much $300 or less.

I'll make sure to get some photos loaded tomorrow of the sights

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated, thanks guys

do you just want something with a wide angle? or something that shoots a panoramic style photo?
