Official Photo Challenge #23 - firearms!

Official Photo Challenge #22 - Focal Points

R U L E S:- The host gives you a topic of interest and you get going. You post ONE image (only first image by one person will be judged) that is relevant to the challenger theme. You can change your image as many times as you like before the deadline.

- The host chooses a winner *AND* runner-up after closing. The decision of the judge (the Host!) is final. The judge is *not* eligible. The winner then chooses the next topic, tells everyone when the photo's must be posted by (give some reasonable amount of time like a week), runs the challenge, judges the winner and passes on the baton to that person. Winner/Host, please post a reasonable topic that someone who's not a pro photographer can be a part of. Remember it's not just cool shots, but the story that can be told for some.

- If the winner fails to post a new challenge within 48 hours of being declared the winner then the runner-up should post the new challenge within a further 24 hours.

- Any picture you've taken is eligible regardless of time taken and camera it was taken with. You can do all the post processing you want. However, it is most helpful if you list your camera, lens and exposure info along with your photo.

- All levels welcome. If you don't have the best lens or just a plain old pocket camera but your shot tells a wonderful story then there's no reason you can't win! This is about overall photo's and their story, not just about expensive equipment.

- Feel free to comment on other contestant's images. If you want someone to leave you a piece of constructive criticism, ask for it...after all we are here to learn too and practice.

- Provide any additional information concerning your entry you want. Explaining how the shot might relate to the topic could help too.

- Winner/Host, please copy and paste these rules into the topic and thread that you post because some might start doing contests later and miss the first one.

-----------------------------

the topic is firearms.

f you have one take the most interesting shot of it. something that shows off what it is in a manly type firearm way. kinda like a focal point of something on it. "use your imagination to capture me ohhh and awwwww"

ill post a few examples.

the winner will be chosen on oct 10th. winner runner ups will be posted and also notified by a PM by me.

i am not judging you by what type of camera you use, i am judging the shot of what it is, and how it makes me wet myself.

here are a couple examples.

It's going to be hard for me to choose one.. but this has always been a favorite of mine...

2.5 second exposure
an entire clip (if not.. most of) coming out of an M-16 -- Full Auto
There is no lighting in this shot other than what you're seeing from the muzzle, obviously no flash.

Love the flying casings... This is in Kentucky, pretty late at night.. So it was truly black out.

I have a # of them on tables.. and held.. (went to KCR twice a year for a few years.. and have a # of FFL friends)

but.. I have always had a thing for long exposure shots.. and I think this one came out very interesting

I should add.. This was taken by hand... 2.5 seconds without moving a muscle is easier said than done... If it weren't for the half dozen or so beers I had just before I took the shot I'd have never been able to maintain that kind of calm
I still need to buy a tripod and remote release

Ok this shot I did solely for this photo contest. I figured this isn't my normal style of photography since I'd rather shoot guns than shoot guns

My setup was pretty basic. Used my 50mm prime lens, took a plain old desk lamp on a bar stool for the main lighting and used a chair with my reflector for some fill lighting. The smoke was not photoshopped in. Yes I actually took some matches and held my hand just out of range and blew them out to get the smoke effect. Got the smoke to line up nice and pretty on my second shot. Tried one more and the cloud was all over the place, so I lucked out. Snapping a picture while blowing out matches ain't the easiest thing in the world I discovered I'm just curious as to which shot you guys think is better. The first shot is just cropped a little since the gun was being held up by placing the bottom part of the handle in a jar. Second shot is converted to duo tone (using blue tint). So which is better or do they both suck? First one is my entry for contest.

Focal Length: 50.4 mm
F-Number: F/3.5
Exposure Time: 0.005 sec. 1/200
Metering Mode: Center-weighted average
ISO Speed: 1600

Damn it Biggy, ya stole my idea. But you got a great shot.

I like the first better. The color tint in the second looks unnatural.

Nice job.

i have tons of pictures of mostly unobtainable guns... but they aren't artsy at all...
Not really entrys.. Just sharing some shots of some neat guns

This one is kind of famous... It's a movie gun.. and yes. It is real.
The guy who shot it didn't have time to bleed... Any guesses?

Friend of mines back yard range.. That is actually kind of empty.. I have some shots full of AK's, M16's, an M60, BAR, and my personal favorite.. MP5SD

Few different guns

looking all over for the quad barrel .50 BMG that the guy who has the booth behind my buds (WW2) cant find it... ill keep looking.. it still works i have a vid somewhere of the firing it... 4 x brls .. 600rpm /barrel 1.00 a round (min for cheapest surplus in 10,000 min orders) --- 2400$ /min

and they were just laying on it

I am very new to this photography hobby, got my first serious camera 2 weeks ago - Canon EOS Digital Rebel xSi. I have a photo book now, can't stop reading and already took about 500 shots just practicing in camera control and stuff like that.

I don't own any firearms but have a coworker that has tons and he agreed for me to come over and use his house and his toys.
I am no Biggy, but I can take a picture of a Kimber as well, no biggy!

So, which one is better? - color or BW? falling dominoes or standing ones. The idea behind the picture was to reflect a trigger action - something that once done - can not be undone and starts a process - just like shooting a gun. so, what do you think?

technical aspect - I used a borrowed Canon 50mm/f1.8 Mk I lens that turned out to be fucked up - the focus ring was broken, and I could not focus on anything closer than 1 meter, even using manual focus, even though the distance scale on a lens started at 0.8

initial idea was to have a wide open shot and freeze falling dominoes but because I could not focus close enough, it did not produce the expected "fuzzy background" effect so had to change the focus point to dominoes and have longer shutter speed to have more "motion"

Also I did not have any lights control except blinds in the window and black sweatshirts and black sofa for the background.

all shot at
Focal Length: 50 mm
