Photo Challenge #33 Inspirational photos

R U L E S:- The host gives you a topic of interest and you get going. You post ONE image (only first image by one person will be judged) that is relevant to the challenger theme. You can change your image as many times as you like before the deadline.

- The host chooses a winner *AND* runner-up after closing. The decision of the judge (the Host!) is final. The judge is *not* eligible. The winner then chooses the next topic, tells everyone when the photo's must be posted by (give some reasonable amount of time like a week), runs the challenge, judges the winner and passes on the baton to that person. Winner/Host, please post a reasonable topic that someone who's not a pro photographer can be a part of. Remember it's not just cool shots, but the story that can be told for some.

- If the winner fails to post a new challenge within 48 hours of being declared the winner then the runner-up should post the new challenge within a further 24 hours.

- Any picture you've taken is eligible regardless of time taken and camera it was taken with. You can do all the post processing you want. However, it is most helpful if you list your camera, lens and exposure info along with your photo.

- All levels welcome. If you don't have the best lens or just a plain old pocket camera but your shot tells a wonderful story then there's no reason you can't win! This is about overall photo's and their story, not just about expensive equipment.

- Feel free to comment on other contestant's images. If you want someone to leave you a piece of constructive criticism, ask for it...after all we are here to learn too and practice.

- Provide any additional information concerning your entry you want. Explaining how the shot might relate to the topic could help too.

- Winner/Host, please copy and paste these rules into the topic and thread that you post because some might start doing contests later

My topic is inspirational shots. I don't mean something that is insipirational to you in a spiritual sense. I want you to take the saying " imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" to heart. So in this challenge I would like you to post 2 photos. The first is your inspiration photo and the second is your recreation of the original. This could be anything from your favorite Ansel Adams photo to an advertising photo of your new car. Using the Ansel Adams example, I obviously don't expect you to travel out to Yosemite and get shots of Half Dome. Try to replicate the lighting, the angle, replace Half Dome with a boulder in the park. This was a exercise that I performed in a photography class and really felt like it helped me to start thinking about all the different factors that go into a great photo.

I will choose a winner on the morning of Monday, Feb. 23rd.

I think I get it. Find a photo by a pro and then try to duplicate it. Very interesting. Let me see what I can do, this will take some work.

I think you guys got it.

My inspirational pic

And my recreation

This was just a really quick example that I reverse engineered. On one hand its good because it has the beach, the weim, the ball and even a little wave in the background. On the other hand, despite being a rather poor photo to begin with, the angle is both to high and from the wrong side. The subject also doesn't fill the frame like the original. Things like depth of field I'm not so concerned about because not everyone is going to have access to that type of equiptment. I will also say that if someone went through all the trouble of getting their dog out to a park to try this, I would take that effort into consideration over a shot that was setup on your kitchen counter.

Yea I saw this shot in a Newsweek magazine. It was in an article about Yousuf Karsh and this shot of Elizabeth Taylor caught my eye. I have a friend who I thought would make as a good model for this type of shot. The only kicker was I guess the angle at which I placed the lights because she kept blinking! Took about 80 shots to get this one which was acceptable.

That is EXACTLY what I'm talking about!

I also like the story. Why you liked the original, why you wanted to recreate it and how you went the extra mile to get it just right.

Really tough choice, had a lot of great entries. Oh, wait...

saQ "C" 1, Thank you for your entry. If it was shot from the same perspective as the original it would have been a hard decision.

Biggy, You are winnar!

Maybe I made the mistake of saying Biggy's photo was "exactly" what I was looking for and scared some people off. It seemed at the time that people were looking for an example of what I was looking for and his was obviously a very good example. And maybe I wasn't clear enough in my description that I would not just consider the finished product in the judging. Oh well, live and learn. Thank you.

ill fix it.. it's a famous picture. one of the most incredible unforgetable faces you'll ever see.. I saw where they tracked her down recently.. she still has the eyes.. but she has really aged (she is in her late twenties, perhaps thirtie now but she has obviously had a much rougher go of things than the pampered soccer moms of america)
