this is why i maintain my own server for pic hosting. dreamhost account is like 9 bucks a month and worth it to be able to do whatever i want with it.

I've lost soooo many pictures over the years due to picture sites shutting down unexpectedly.

HDTony.... Damn glad to meet you!

Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.

I downloaded all (at least almost all.. around 120gb) from them and made a backup to disk.. then I also bought a mozy unlimited account (5$ a month) and uploaded it all to there as well.. so I now have a USB disk copy, smugmug, and mozy..

They aren't gone.. I don't know if they lost a router or a load balancer or what... All of their images are hosted on the amazon s3 network..

I am actually quite happy with the service I get from them... I even upgraded my account although I really don't use 90% of the stuff in the "Power" account... 40$ a year for unlimited hosting is awesome (i know have the 60$ power account).. I have around 150gb total up there now.. and often run 5-10gb a month in traffic..

You're welcome.

Its pretty much a weekly posting on one of the photo boards I visit. Which is one of 2 reasons I dont sign up for them. Other being they wont take MO for membership fees.

Just out of curiosity... Why would you pay for image hosting via money order?

MO is paying only what is said and agreed. With a CC company can keep on file and then add charges for things not discussed or fines for misuse of there site. Several hosting site are known to hold domain hostage for fines if CC is not charged. just my

That's reasonable...
That said smugmug support has been great in my every interaction with them... a few times I have gotten the owner... Just email them a question.. seems like any time (literally I have gotten 3am replies from people pretty high up... guess they are real geeks living in their moms basement on hot pockets and mountain dew... and never sleeping)

In any case... not once have I personally been disappointed ... this isn't an ad.. I am just saying... everybody always complains loudly but never says anything when something is good.. consider this the other half

flickr is pretty cool too.. I have a free account there - I had a pro one for free from yahoo but still.. really didn't use it much... It's yahoo now.. which is good and bad.... it's the big kid on the block.. and it seems to be more of a social network than smugmug anyway

The first time I saw this thread earlier today, I thought we had a member named Smugmug who went down. Which made me kinda sad till just now when I opened it, who cares if Smugmug is down. And if we did, wouldn't we have known if we used it. lol
