haha ya i have never done a motorcycle clutch before. i'm sure i can figure it out if i start taking things apart, i just done want to take the wrong thing apart and figure it out the hard way.
ok i went ahead and started taking it apart. once i took the center cover and bearing off i found the nut that holds it on. now i just need the tool for that nut, as HDTony told me its a special tool that is needed.
See those Philips head screws, You need to Find a Screwdriver that fits them EXACTLY. they are tighter than a muffugger. Last itme we did it Craftsman screwdrivers fit it perfect. You dont want to strip those! Get the screw driver in there, put an assload of pressure on it and use a wrench to break them loose.
i used a impact screw driver to remove the screws.
i couldnt get the correct socket for the clutch pack nut from the dealer so i used a cheap craftsman 13/16 socket. with a little grinding it worked perfect.
you think those clutch screws are tight, you should try to remove the screws from the stator plate on the other side of the motor. incredible. the crazy part is they arent really in that tight, the tolerances are just perfect so they fit together fricken perfect. This is one of the many reasons why the honda bottom end is so good, japanese quality.
well i have the clutch out and in my hands i would like to install the hd springs. the new ones that i got look like they are to big?? are these correct??
the old ones are on the left and new on the right....
you've removed the wrong springs. its not the little springs on the front of the clutch, put those back. you need to remove the screws that go through the clutch pack, drop the plates out, then replace the springs inside. reassemble
haha good eye. after i cleaned up i put the kick start on and the body work and fired it up. that thing has a TON of compression now. its almost hard to kick over. it fired right up and ran good.
i need to reset the valve lash, my feeler gauge is to wide and will not give me an accurate reading.
Vcook thanks for talking me out of buyn a pos motor that would have probably caused me trouble down the road and for all the info. rep on the way!
you'll like the 88. great grunt, solid reliability. Get a uni filter and ditch that piece of crap it comes with.
