I wonder the same thing. I have two giant metal bowls, though, so I'll give that a try.
Seems like it would be easier with something with a fitted lid, though.

You have to whack the ever living shit out of it with the heel of your hand.

I'm going to try this tonight. Garlic-o-rama.

I don't know. Give it a try and report back.

Perhaps he's just not a 4-5 clove kind of guy. Perhaps if you're using 4-5 cloves, you should just use the whole head. Maybe he lives with 8 wives. I don't know.

Great, now I have two huge mixing bowls stinking of garlic that have to be washed now.

Great idea in a kitchen where some other poor sap has to clean your mess up.

I have some computer work to do, I promised a friend. I think it's going to have to wait while I have a few brews and watch TV. Went winter boot shopping with the kids tonight and they wore me out.

I'm happy to report that this trick TOTALLY F*CKING WORKED!
1 head of garlic = 20 cloves.
Smacked it with my hand, retrieved two cloves from the living room, put it all between two large metal prep bowls, shook "the dickens" out of it, and out came 19 perfectly peeled cloves. The 20th clove, after I peeled it by hand, really was a bit green so meant for the trash anyway.
Bought the head of garlic about 3-4 weeks ago.

Best.
Trick.
Ever.

The other day I made chili. I needed garlic, so I tried this out. I'd be damned, worked really well. I tossed the whole head in-between two pots and had at. No pre-smashing.
