Never really followed a recipe - i just add vanilla ice cream, 2% milk, chocolate syrup and some malt flavoring and turn on the blender. Never comes out the same, but usually ends up pretty good either way.

Seriously? What is the consistency like afterward, really watery or still reasonably thick?

If you have a decent blender that can whip a good amount of air into it, it should be rather thick.

I use chocolate ice cream, whipping cream, and a touch of coffee concentrate syrup. Yum. It must be topped with whipped cream, and sprinkles.

I bought a Vitamix this year, so have been making milkshakes, smoothies, and frappucinos like Martha Stewart on speed. It is simply the most amazing thing in my kitchen.

Holy shit, I was going to pimp the http://www.blendtec.com/, but it seems like the Vitamix is on the same playing field. Pricey, but I'm betting that Vitamix will last as long as you do!

I can make tomato sauce in no time at all-- cut an onion in half, throw in whole tomatoes, and it makes SMOOTH sauce. Seriously....not one single chunk.
Actually, it works so fast that it makes WARM sauce. There are a lot of Vitamix recipes for soup that don't even call for cooking.

I have also made badass lemonade with the vitamix. You don't have to supreme the citrus, just peel and toss in the vitamix (including seeds!) It makes chicago style frozen lemonade that tastes better than you can get at a fair.

It also cleans in like 5 seconds.

You can buy refurb units from the manufacturer and they still ahve a 7 year warranty. I would have done that but I had a remaining gift card from WS which made it the same price to me, so I bought mine new. Costco also has amazing deals which include a dry canister in the price. I have a friend who makes homemade almond milk in hers.
