Best Time to Drive thru Chi During the Day?

It's been a while since we've driven through, and I've heard that many of the highways are totally eff'ed.

We're hoping to leave morning-ish to drive through North to South (usually take 94) so whats the best time to be driving through after 9AM?

Wink 11-02-2010 06:34 PM

10-11am

Xian_13 11-02-2010 06:43 PM

At best, how busy will it be?

We are looking to drive through, with the option of going completely out of our way.
The out of the way option only adds 1:20 to the total time.

Seriously...It's a crapshoot but between 10 AM and 2 PM is the time window that gives you the best chance of avoiding the most congestion. BUT... The Kennedy, Ryan, Skyway etc. can suddenly become a parking lot because of the littlest fender bender or a simple disabled vehicle. Something major and you could be at a standstill for an excruciating amount of time.
I've started taking the Tri State around...it adds miles but usually cuts time...until you hit construction in Indiana (if you're going that way).

EDIT: Kennedy = 90/94 south of the Edens (94) junction, Ryan = 90/94 south of loop to Skyway which = 90 as Ryan continues to be 94...Tri State is the 294 tollway which goes around the city rather than through it.

Driving a car in the day is always fawked. Ride a bike and lanesplit the whole way there!

Freeway names mean nothing to me, I need the numbers. :)

crashomon 11-02-2010 07:00 PM

Wink's correct: 10am is the magic hour to be hitting Dempster or thereabouts.

So, if you're crossing the state line around 900-915, you should be in great shape.

That's what we do when going to Autobahn, Grattan, or Gingerman.
Not possible this time around.

10-11am is the best all week. If you leave the Milwaukee area by 9-9:30 am on I94, you'll be in the heart of Chicago in 1 hr 45 min. (I'm working in Milwaukee now, sometimes going straight to Chicago). :2cents:

That sounds like a consensus then. :)

Thanks for the help!

When everyone is reloading?

G2G 11-03-2010 04:04 PM

where are you coming from and where are you going?? There are ways around traffic.

gkotlin 11-03-2010 04:13 PM

Never is best. 5:30 am -6:30 am isn't bad. It's hard to tell. The "Spur" connection of where 94 splits from 294 and goes toward the lake is under construction. Listen to am 780. They have traffic every 10 minutes.

If you can tell us a rough time of day, and where your going to, we can give you a better guess. Compared to the traffic you are used to. It will always suck.

PatFitz9 11-03-2010 04:21 PM

If you're coming from WI and passing through the city, why not take 294? It should be fast during the day, but Indiana traffic sucks too if you end up going east.

truckstop 11-04-2010 04:59 PM

We prefer taking 41 to 94 because we don't have to pay tolls then. We save over $300 per summer by not taking toll routes.

Path is from Milwaukee, to 57
