Just that there were 3 of them who could have subdued him. I dont see the reason for the knee drop. Seemed a little excessive for a guys who was naked.

Excessive for 3 people to control 1 person? Yes it would be overkill if he was wearing clothes. But he was naked. So the cops only wanted to use there hands. The were trying to control him while also keeping him at a 12 inch distance from their bodies. That removes all of your power and removes the ability to use your mass to control someone. So the first to control him was really 6 arms vs one persons whole body.
The knee drop may or may not be over board. If he was fully with strained and cuffed then hell yeah its over board. If they were using it as a way to startle the wizard (stun him for a second) and gain control to hand cuff before he can fully react it is not excessive. If the cop was knee dropping him because he was angry that the wizard dared to try and fight him then that cop should be stripped of his badge.
