Its called 'zero tolerance'. Schools officials do this so they dont have to think anymore. Theres no more common sense anymore in school administration.
It's called this because I do not want to justify myself to you at a later date just because what I called gum was candy.

The student was brought into the principal's office to discuss what he did. That is all that happened. The parent was notified for one reason or another and the parent contacted the paper.

"Almost Suspended" Like most schools I am sure they have a code of conduct for students and parents to follow. Most have a progressive discipline policy which goes from a teacher student conference to expulsion. A teacher student conference is just a teacher telling you to stop a certain behavior in class. One step away from that is suspension. So anytime a student is corrected by a teacher it is an "Almost Suspension"

Did your parents contact the newspaper every time you spoke with the principal?

The parent didn't even say if the kid got anything more than a talking to. The parent said they were just building Legos and this happened. What if the kid was running around a a crowded cafeteria pretending to shoot people, and generally not following directions. Would it be okay for the student to be sent to the principal's office for this?

The school can not comment on what happened because it would be breaking privacy laws, so you only have the parent's word of what happened.

The New York Daily News is an "Almost Suspension" away from the Weekly World News.

My wife and son were threatened with arrest by a middle school principal because my son drew historically accurate WW2 cartoons (with input from his friends) and assigned each of their names to the world leaders relevant at the time. Apparently when the Jewish kid said it would be funny if he was Hitler in the cartoons (and was drawn that way), the principal literally went into hysteria with threatening on no less than 10 occasions in his face and my wife's that he would call the cops and have them arrested for Hate Crimes. After about 40 minutes of that shit, and an assistant principal trying to calm the head guy down my wife finally just got up and left... My son got 5 days internal suspension for a cartoon.

Zero tolerance, in a lot of cases = excuse for adults to stop using common sense and a blank license to act like an asshole... "Because that's policy"

I like how the lady is considering suing the school. fucking people. that makes her just as bad as the stupid principal who somewhat overreacted.

I dont know, I think I am for this. slap em so hard in the face then maybe next time they will think twice before doing something stupid.

Now wait a minute--he was "nearly suspended"???? And meanwhile a HISPANIC girl is LED AWAY IN HANDCUFFS for doodling on her desk???? Anyone else here suspecting racial profiling in the other cases of intolerant principals and teachers???
Nice how people then go to racism.

And we have liberal political correctness to blame.

He was sent to the principal's office. That is it. Nothing more. I would be willing to say he was being an ass and making machine guns sounds with it in the cafeteria. And being sent to the office for this is no big deal.. It was the Teabagger parent that called the paper.

Read some of the threads on here and see how people over-react as soon as something happens.

The luger that died fencing and Plexiglas is needed. Some of the home owner association threads you would think our members sit on the Chicago City Council with their reactions.

"WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO SAY FOR YOURSELF AND WHAT YOU DID????"

"im 9."

Whats wrong with making machine gun sounds? How is that being an ass? They are kids they have imagination try embracing it lol.

That's right no child should ever be sent to the principal's office.

But then most of you are in favor of corporal punishment.

I could introduce you to some nine year olds you would not be able to stand for more than an hour.

I am just pointing out there are things that are unknown and the kid was sent to the office.

Let me give you a situation he is making gum sounds and a teacher asks him to stop. He doesn't the teacher than asks him for the toy that is creating the distraction. He refuses the teacher then has him removed to the office.

Was this an over reaction. Because I will bet the story is closer to my version than the mothers.

So let's say that your version is right. Then why would suspension be in question? Also, why would the parents want to sue the school? Last time I checked, disobeying a teacher in that manner got you a detention or two.

It wasn't it was according to the parent an "almost Suspension". Like I posted earlier if I verbally correct and reprimand a student in class that is only one step away from suspension so that is an "almost suspension".

Why does the parent pant to sue the school? Lots of parents see the school doing something to their child a hitting the lotto. She is a drama queen that needs attention. The parent called the NY Post, not the standard when it comes to journalistic integrity. But I digress, The student did not even receive a detention he was brought to the office and the parent was contacted. Nothing else was done by the school.

There must be two or three times a school year when a parent has said she was going to sue me and the school.

[Patrick and a friend were playing with Lego figures in the school cafeteria

They were not in a classroom they were in the cafeteria. Patrick did nothing wrong. So when does having fun in the cafeteria make a kid a "bad kid".

What are the rules for the cafeteria?

Were they told they could have toys?

Were they instructed to clean up?

Were they in their seats?

Were they not botherig other students?

The parent is not telling you this and the school can't tell you what happened.
