Oklahoma Highway Patrol officers say a highway that was buckled by the heat caused a motorcycle accident.

It happened Sunday afternoon just after 4 o'clock at mile marker 40 on Highway 412 in Pawnee County, OK.

Officers say Chason Lewis, 36, from Enid, OK, was driving his 2008 Honda CBR westbound when he hit a section of roadway that had buckled due to the heat.

The buckled road caused a two-foot ramp in the highway, launching the motorcycle airborne for 150 feet.

The driver skidded another 222 feet on the roadway.

Lewis was life flighted from the scene and admitted to a Tulsa hospital in stable condition with severe injuries.

The cause of the crash is listed as a defect in the roadway.
I believe I heard on CNN that he later died.

Commonly called "blow ups" by those who maintain the roads these "buckles" in the pavement can happen quite suddenly in excessively hot summer weather. Here in Illinois many of the major roads have had pressure relief joints built into them that ease the severity of blow ups but they can still happen. I worked pavement blow ups on both the Tri State and Northwest Tollways that went across all lanes and were hip high to my 5' 10' frame. I can see a motorcycle at highway speed being launched like Evel jumping the tower at Caeser's Palace! Basically what happens is the concrete road bed expands rapidly because of heat and has no way to go but up.
Be mindful that they can happen, especially on older secondary roads and be careful whether you're riding or driving!

Weather in Oklahoma is beating all kinds of records right now... I've been here for almost a week, and it's been over 100 degrees every f'n day. I think they might be close to a month of consecutive days over 100...

Really sucks for the rider, although looks like he made it alive out of it. He would've been ok if he rode a motard! :evil
I know, I'm going to hell.

Yep, you gotta watch for these.

Even the "relief points" can "hump" up and give you a start. I went over one that wasn't obvious on I-57 yesterday south of Sauk Trail and got a surprise. Being on the balls of my feet and light on the bars made it a non-issue, but a surprise nonetheless.

Passed a car/bike accident on IL-71 near SR as well. Looks like one of them had crossed the double-yellow in a turn and hit the other. Biker was standing and did not appear to have injuries. Lots of people on the scene, they told me they did not need further assistance. Bike was messed up pretty good.

NEVER cross a yellow line, and always try to give the line a foot or two berth in case oncoming traffic is a little over.

How did he not see that? Unless they pop up in a split second he had to have seen that one coming. At least think something was up when the cars in front of him were swerving.

Majority of highways in OK have 75 speed limit. Assuming he was going only conservatively 10 mph over, he caught some serious air for sure...
At 75 mph he would have traveled 110 feet/sec

that said. That would be one scary ride.

you always have a car doing surveillance in front of you?
