You guys keep this up long enough and somebody's gonna stumble on the cure for cancer! :D

(complete with diagrams even)

Shit, I figured that out months ago :D :D

It's because the 180 is a taller tire and you've effectively raised your gearing. It's like taking two teeth off the rear sprocket. :p

Actually, the 180's are generally taller than the 190s, but not so much to cause this to happen.

Have you done some suspension changes, put in some cheap gas, or been eating lots of pizza due to the short, cooler days? Any of these could be part of it.

I thik its the other way around. a 190 would have a 95mm sidewall and a 180 would have a 90mm sidewall. so the 180 would be sorter.

Bridgestone Tires BT010R BW TL

180/55ZR17 O/A Diameter = 24.7 Tread Width = 7.3
190/50ZR17 O/A Diameter = 24.7 Tread Width = 7.5
200/50ZR17 O/A Diameter = 24.9 Tread Width = 7.8

So off the rim they are the same heighth jsut different width. That doesn't help us on what happens after they are put on the rim.

Less rubber equals less tire.
I'm sticking with my theory. Ricerocket confirmed it too. We all agreed they tuck the sidewalls of the 190 in a bit wich would give it a bigger contact patch when inflated and a smaller diameter

Hey I was just lookin at the bridgstone website. Are you guys talking about 180/55/17 vs. 190/50/17 or 180/50/17 vs. 190/50/17?

The fisrst one your right it would be almost identicle due to plus one minus one sizing. But the second one which I thought we were talking about would have a difference.

With the Bridgestone I was looking at the first;)

ok then that makes sence. If you take one size away from the cross sction and add one to the profile then it will have almost the same overall diameter. but will be slighly narrower. And should give you about the same contact patch, I think the difference would be negligable in that comparison. Most likey it would take someone like Miguel Duhamel to notice a major difference.

tony your almost there. Now take into reason that the design of the 190 tucks the sidewall in to give you more tread with and then when you inflate the tire you get more diameter with the 180 and less of a contact patch due to the extreme profile inflation provides.;) if you don't believe me I'm riding over to your house tonight so I can show you and smack you upside the head:laughing :laughing :rofl

They dont design it to tuck the sidewall. That is caused by the rim size. you put a wider tire on a same size rim, the sidewall is gonna tuck.

No where in thier literature does it say something like, "oh on this size tire we desisgned the sidewall to tuck so youll have a better contact patch." thatis all relational to squezzing it n the rim

And if your comin over to smak me down you better bring a lunch, its gonna be a long night :D :D

You don't have that many miles on the new tires yet, put it on a rearstand and get out the megacrometer. I'm not an expert on this at all. I'm just going by what has been passed on to me through forums much like this.

I had a 160 on a 5.5" rim on my '92 GSXR. It gave you more contact area when straight up and less when leaned. The cross section was almost square. It was harder to turn in because you were rolling thebike up on the corner so to speak. But I think a 190 would give you a better contact patch at any angle over a 180 because they are both designed for a 6" rim. The advantage to a 160 for drag racing comes from the fact the sidewalls are pulled out to make it fit a rim it was not designed for. If my bike should have a 190 I will use a 190. Using anything else will compromise something.
