It was a beautiful day for the fifth Bears win and fourth complete blow out of the season! The Bears scorched the Bills by the score of 40-7 today at Soldier Field. The Bears had this game put away with a 30 point lead to start the fourth quarter so most of their starters sat the last period out. The only Bills score was late in the fourth after Brian Griese fumbled the snap and gave the Bills the ball at the Chicago 42 yard line. 6 plays later JP Losman connected with Lee Evans for a six yard TD pass with 1:06 left in the game.
ON OFFENSE:
Rex had another very good day connecting on 15/27 for 182 yards 2TD and 0 INTs. He did throw a few balls that were bad decisions and could have had 2 picks if the Bills secondary could catch better. Rex hit Berrian for an 8yd TD on a quick slant and Rashied Davis for a 15 yard crossing TD. He almost had another 40+ yard TD to Berrian but BB was unable to get both feet down after catching the ball. BB did have a beauty of a reception on a 62 yard bomb. The Bills played honest defense and didn't sell out against the run so it was tougher to pass but the OL was providing good protection and the receivers were getting open. Moose and Des Clark were quiet today with 3 catches between them, but both were drawing a lot of coverage away from Berrian and Davis.
The running game also was rolling well today with both Jones and Benson making an impact. Jones rolled for 109 yard on 22 carries with a long of 14. Benson added 48 yards on 14 carries and two TDs with a long run of 11 yards. Both backs looked better than in recent weeks as the OL was opening holes all day.
The OL deserves some big props for this game. They manhandled the Bills front four all game long in pass and run blocking. Grossman and Griese were each sacked once but for the most part had great time to throw all day.
ON DEFENSE:
Another darn near flawless day from the defense. 3 INTs, 3 sacks and two fumble recoveries were the telling stats of the day. This defense continues to get constant pressure from the DL and cause turnovers. They gave up a total of 173 yards the entire game and held league-leading rusher Willis MacGahee to 50 yards on 14 carries.
Mark Anderson continues to shine in spot duty and collected another two sacks today. Adewale Ogunleye missed todays game with a pulled hamstring so Anderson, Boone and Idoneje all got more playing time today at LDE. Tommie Harris and Tank Johnson played well side by side and proved near impossible to block most of the game. Alex Brown had a big day with a sack and a nice INT when he sniffed out a screen play. Ricky Manning Jr. added another INT on a jumped route and Briggs took the third INT after Losman tossed one over the middle under pressure.
SPECIAL TEAMS:
Robbie Gould set a team record with his 4/4 FG performance hitting on 17 straight FG attempts this season. Three of those four were from 40+ yards. Devin Hester had a good day returning punts breaking one open for 21 yards.
OVERALL:
Two complete dominations in a row at home for the Bears. The owned the Bills from start to finish. It was never even close. The Bears are absolutely the best team in the NFL right now. If they can keep up this level of play, there is no reason for them not to be in the Super Bowl this year! The Bears play the Arizona Cardinals next week on Monday Night Football in Arizona. MNF has never been kind to the Bears in the past but Arizona has trouble on the OL and that is always disaster against the Bears. I predict a 31-9 shellacking of the Cards in front of the nation! The Bears should go 6-0 heading into their bye week in two weeks.
