Anyone Play Guitar?

I ask, because I need an extra set of ears, and maybe a night to crank my amp:

I've probably only played for 2 hours in the past 3 years. I'm not really that good...probably because I don't practice (nor have much time to). But back in the day, my guitar playing buddies and I used to meet up at a friends house...he had a basement that we somewhat sound proofed so we could CRANK...and we'd just meet up down there and make noise. Dial in amps, try out different tubes, cabs, speakers, strings. Basically it was a gear fest. It really helped when you thought your tone sucked and you had someone else give it a listen and maybe a tweak or knob and your like holy fucking shit (reference BurntAsh's shirt) that tone ROCKS!

So I'm wondering if anyone here plays, and maybe has some space to CRANK. I'd bring over my gear; amps, cabs, pedals, guitars, some exotic brews and we'd just have a tone fest.

Anyone here play that might be up for hosting something like this? I'd totally host...if I wasn't in a one bedroom apartment. :)

I like the Ibanez....
I too suffer from being in a place I cannot crank it (the amp that is)
The folks on the condo board tend to frown on the Marshall dialed up.
I to have played about 5 hrs in the last 2 years....don't feel bad.
Guitars are odd, like fancy bikes you always want a new one even if you don't use the one you already have.....strange...

We call that G.A.S.

Gear Acquisition Syndrome

Some amp porn from my own collection:

I built this one for my Dad for his 55th birthday:

My old collection. I sold all the amps except for the Magnatone to buy Brianne her engagement ring:

The '62 Magnatone:

I need to service it before I can play it again. That's one of my winter projects.

Yeah, I play. Been into rockabilly and country / bluegrass / gospel roots music lately. I like the guitar in that kind of music. It isn't so much about the volume or latest sound but more about the feel.:) If it makes your feet feel like tappin' your feet or brings a tear to youe eye, I like it. I've been playing since before the invention of time. Before the Rolling Stones. Now, that doesn't mean I'm that good. It just means I'm that old.

I'd like to get together and get some pointers. All these years and I still suck. Because of you, I've got gear I can't play..... I built a handwired bassman, but it was to much for when I lived in an apartment, and I suck.
I've got a strobe tuner and assembled some of my own guitars as well.

Ron Hix is pretty darn good, but he doesn't come out and play unless we're paying to see him at a gig. Dano (Dan Ortega) plays in a band, but I've never heard them.

Any day but Tuesdays is good for me.

Greg,

Find a place that we can jam and I'd love to meet up! I still suck though. I'm much, much worse then way back when. I just play louder. :)

Sorry for getting you hooked on it. I'll make it up to you by servicing your Bassman for you, if you order the parts (Assuming you haven't taught yourself how to do it already).

Hey, my brother asked me to become a back up drummer for his band, lemme see if he can accept a non-Asian in his place of sexin'. It's in Hanover Park though, but we can rock out as loud as we want (corner house).

hm i play acoustic, but in a few months I'd really like to upgrade it to an acoustic electric, most likely from the Ibanez AW line. :1pimp

one of these bad boys

ive got like a crappy old electric Fender strat my parents bought me like 5 years ago for $150 that needs strings. maybe ill pick some up today and see how it works with the mini amp they gave me :lmao:

I almost picked up one of those $99 korean made Strats in big metallic flake gold paint. For a $99 guitar, it played awesome....and I would care if it got beat up.

The Red one in the first photo is one I built from parts. I had a neck made to my specs, I use the same Texas Special pickups Ron uses, and a Strat body and parts of eBay with some custom wiring I did myself.

Fantastic guitar, especially when you consider it was made in...something like 1953 and really hasn't changed much!

I play guitar.

I have three guitars right now. One Alvarez acoustic, 80s Ibanez EX series 24 fret guitar and one 70s era Fender Strat.

My amp is a Line 6 Flextone III and the only other effect I own is a CryBaby wah pedal I have had for years.

When I get home I'll see if I can get pics up of my gear.

Yep. Paint actually is Duplicolor's new Paint Shop line. Isnt bad paint. Clear has a good gloss after rubbing out. It comes pre mixed. Just add to cup and spray. Gonna go back to using HOC or ChromaPremier. Little more stout paint than the duplicolor. .

all this custom talk is making me jealous

id like to make a custom acoustic :1pimp

i wonder how pricey itd be, and the quality of my end product and workmanship is suspect

One of the shops I worked at had a violin maker/repair shop above it. He showed me how to make an acoustic guitar. It's a really neat process, but it takes years to get it down decently, and some woodworking skills to boot.

Try this instead:

I've got a Taylor six string. A 714-C model I think, the first ones to use the new (current) ribbing that sounds better.

IMHO, you can do better with your money then Taylor. It's a workhorse, but if you're spending $1800 on an acoustic, I think you can get something better sounding then a Taylor.

Not that I'm unhappy with it, it's just that looking back I could have done better for that much buying new.

I have a Takamine that I love. I also have a Larivee' that sounds phenominal. Both are electreefied dreadnaughts and the Takamine has a cutout. The Larivee' is made partly of african sapelle wood and has a wonderful sound. I was in the market for a Martin when I came across the Larivee'. The Larivee' sounded better than any of the Martins I tried.

I also have a 56 copy Tokai Strat ( I actually like this better than the american), a 62 re-issue american Strat, a Fernandes Tele with a B-bender installed, a Samick mandolin and a Yamaha acoustic. My next acquisition will be a Gretsch 6120. I love them things.:)

I've got an LTD Mh1k-deluxe (the red Duncan version), a Fernandez with an EMG81 in it, an Ibby rg7621 (7 string - I had a Meshuggah phase), a $100 Turser acoustic that I'm actually pretty impressed with, and one of those $100 strats (out on extended loan to buddy). It also amazed me for the money. I know people love to hate-on LTD's but That thing is my baby. Thought my Gibson was until I got the MH1000. Duncan JB made me learn to truly appreciate just how sterile EMG81's really sound. Sold my other LTD (EC2005) and the Voodoo Les Paul. Like all you guys with G.A.S. the "used-to-have" list goes on but I really only had one moderately cool guitar (at least at the time). Back in the early 90's I got my hands on a USA ESP Hammet (when there was still such a thing as USA ESP's). I hate trems, but I should have held on to that one. Grown up a little and not 'obsessed' with metal anymore and I like the aggressive but organic sound of the Duncans now. Never had Triple Rec money, let alone boutique - but I stumbled across the Madison head and it's enough to get my juices flowing. I also am unable to get it anywhere near the sweet spot in my townhouse. I looked at hotplate attenuators and the reviews are pretty ho-hum for what they cost, so I just use my little Peavy Rage. Heheh. Someday I'd like to have a Jet (http://www.jetguitars.com/. In the meantime here's my noisemaker:

I went through a very similar evolution. Did the EMG for the high gain crunch thing, but evolved into DiMarzio thanks to Satch. Speaking of which:

One of seven. Signed by Joe Satriani.

I unfrotunately sold it to pay rent during a rough period in my life, after all the mesa boogie gear was stolen out of my van, and gave up guitar playing for 7 years. I managed to track down the current owner...he's some rich dude in NY who collects guitars, and I'm told I could put a down payment on a house with this guitar.

Anywho, if we do get a jam day together, you HAVE to make it. I've never heard of Madison, and I think you'd apprecaite my Peters amp...oh yes I do. :)

Rob, awesome job on the paint. Like I said, I ruined my project. After stripping it and redoing it three times, I just left it. Ugly, but usable.

Yeah I never sold a piece of gear for any other reason. Wish I still had it all but that's life - heheh. I'm happy with my current rig, although I never really play anymore. The Madison is four EL34 power tubes, two 12AT7 and two 12AX7 pre amp tubes. Love it (especially for what it cost). They keep changing the model so it looks different now, and aesthetically I think mine is the second generation of three so far. I'm pretty much a hack but it's always fun to play.

Wow, 100 watts of EL34. I'm surprised it uses TWO 12AT7. Typically a single one is used as the phase inverter, but sometimes it's used to tone down the gain on a raspy sounding amp (think Peavy 5150).

I'd really like to hear it!

Slo Roll, you got some nice gear! I love the Tokai Strats, and I wish I could find a Tokai body to build another Strat out of. It sure would beat the snot out of this American frankenstrat I'm playing now! I'd love to hear some of that gear, and I think you'd apprecaite some of the tones you could get from my '62 magnatone. I just need to order up some parts to service the beast and put the speakers back into it. I should get on that this week since I have some vacation time. :)

I always thought the 5150 sounded cool, but the Revolution sounded better. Maybe it was just me. I do think Peavy as a whole is under-rated. My first Head (i.e. - non-practice-amp) was a Peavy Ultra 160.

I pretty much just run a chorus pedal and straight-in. Keep-it-simple-stupid. I'm a career rythm guitarist -

I been playing since I was 8.
I have:
Jackson King V Dave Mustaine Series
Jackson King V Standard
Jackson Dinky w/ reverse headstock
Gibson Les Paul Standard (I can't remember what year)
Marshall Amps
DOD and Boss effect pedals (don't use as much since I got the effects processor)
Cry Baby
Boss Effects Processor

Tony heard some of the stuff my band use to play when I had one. At 1 time we had this girl playing lead guitar with me and she rocked and she had a great voice also.

I also play drums (use to have a Pearl 12 piece double bass set), Bass and the female organ.

Here's an older photo of my current gear:

American Strat and Ernie Ball Music Man SUB1. I probably play the SUB1 90% of the time, I love that guitar. Started on a Fender Squire Bullet in 8th grade, and moved up to a Charvette during my metal years LOL. I bought then Strat in college and will certainly hold on to that one.

I recently picked up a DigiTech RP50 which is a handy little effects processor.
