As part of the ongoing child proofing I have been wanting to ditch the old glass and steel stand and figure out a way to get the TV onto the built in bookshelfs.

My 4 year old 50" Sammy DLP has served me well and I was about to banish her to the basement for a thin and sexy LCD variety so I could rest her on the cabinet and not have to remove any of the shelving.

I decided to try to save an unneeded purchase and configure a way to add some depth to my cabinet by removing some of the lower shelves.

After a couple hours of tearing this tank of bookshelf apart and some precise cuts, I came away with what I think is a much improved setup.

Here's the old setup...

I remembered once my brother put his finger in a outlet once when we were kids. The lights flickered and my parents came running up and saw him crying and me laughing my ass off.
Dude, dump that old Comcast DVR and get the new one.. 180 gig hard drive (you have the 60 gig)

nice TV set up

I stuck a u-shaped paper clip in one during a play in 5th grade backstage. Loud bang and flash scurt me enough to not become an electrician. :jester

And by child proofing you mean pulling all the knobs off the cabinets? :laughing

Looks good tho with that nice area you have I would have saved the shelf and mounted it to the wall on the other side on the room. Its looks akward to me sitting in that corner. plus there is to much going on that main wall leaving the right wall empty.

You say child proofing but I dont see it you placed a big tv higher up. accessible by a child being able to climb on that ledge by the fire place, then onto the self that is just as much of a hazard as is the metal stand Just my two cents.

Tho that room looks relaxing especially on a snowy winter day

i was about 12 when i leaned against a recep that didn't have a cover on it. it felt like somebody punched me in the side. that hurt! i play with electricity still, i just make sure my electrician friend is there to keep an eye on me.

electricity should be CLSB-proofed!

Wow...so many responses and opinions for a thread that was basically for Vcook. :) Allow me to attempt to address them all.

The clutter is my wife's design...if it were up to me Id have a couple shelves of my books and thats about it.

I just swapped out and old DVR for what I believe is the new DVR upstairs. Blue LED face? Testing it out right now...not sure if its my imagination but the PQ seems alot sharper and brighter.

Removing all kithen knobs and pulls is pure genius. My wife cant even open them! More carryout is good.

Ive yet to see a DLP mounted on the wall. The family room has 4 cables, 1 in each shelf, and one in eack opposite cornern. Ive tried all locations and though a fireplace mount would balance the room better, this current location is the best for viewing given our seating and offers a kitchen view as well. A right wall mount would create tremendous glare and force us to move the seating in front of the windows.

My son loves to climb and yes the fireplace hearth is his favorite. Its a huge jump up to the cabinet and he's been taught to stay away from it. There was a much better chance of him climbing on, or worse behind, the old location with the metal/glass stand. The new location is about 10 inches higher and the chair is there to discourage him from throwing stuff at the screen and/or preventing the set from falling.

have you tested it with the green alien porn? I mean that's our standard for TV's now right?
