Hey guys wondering if you could help me, I have a problem getting the bike from first to second gear while accelerating, it just goes into nuetrol and i have to press the clutch in again and only then it goes into second. Also when when I am downshifting from 2 to 1 it doesn't go into 1 again I have to let go of the clutch then put it back in and only then will it go into first. The bike is a 2001 r6 if that helps with a little over 5,000 miles.

sounds like either a clutch spring problem?...OR a dog bone between 1-2nd gear which really takes some abuse if your not shifting the bike good.

get it check by a pro...is my honest suggestion.

not to sound too obvious, but have you tried shifting it up/down a bit harder? if you are all nice about it, it has a habit of popping into neutral.

I would hate to see you spend any cash on it when it's just a case of pussyfootitis (i think that's what i heard it called on SBN) :D

Good luck either way.
If this is the case....try playing with the lever position to get it in a more comfy spot to crank that puppy up into gear. The Yami's have rough trannies to begin with.

Yep, my VMax requires shifting like you mean it.
When you say hard acceleration are you talking running it up to 11,000-14,000 rpms? If this is when you are having problems getting it into second, then it might be your shifting technique. I've been there and I know what you mean.

If I am running it up to near redline in first or second, I will use a harder throw to put it into gear. Yamaha is known for their rough trannies. Just work on shifting a little firmer. Eventually, you will get a better feel for how hard you have to throw it in to gear depending on the gear and the rpms. Also, this may sound weird, but if you have smaller feet or really large feet, this might be a problem. Now if it starts slipping out of gear under acceleration...that's another story.

try adjusting your clutch cable at all?
Doc, I actaully just remebered you did warn me about upshifting when i was getting the bike at the auction but that still doesn't explain the fist to second shift, that happens when I rolling and if I am already stopped.

Also I wanted to thank all you guys for you imput because this thing is really bugging me.
It happens to me sometimes when I am at stop too. If it does, try rolling the bike forward or backward and it should slip in. Also, what kind of oil are you running? You might want to switch to synthetic. When I switched to synthetic oil, it shifted so much easier and it didn't do what you explained as much.

BTW- I had no idea you were the same person that bought that bike at the auction. That buy was a steal!

:eek:t

I still cannot believe I got exactly the bike that I wanted for so cheap, I also didn't know I was going to get as addicted to it as I am right now.:thumbsup :)
I forget if you are tall or not, but you might have to lower the shift lever so that your foot can fully shift it up without jamming up your ankle joint/lifting foot off the peg. I always miss shifts on other peoples bikes due to the odd angles involved with longer legs. Try adjusting the shift rod that goes between the shifter lever and the tranny gear change lever to make the bike fit you better if getting it in gear tends to be a chore/weak shifts.

Hmmmm.... how many tiems did I do that yesterday. I reversed my shift pattern to help solve this problem mainly in the higher gears, but I actaully do it mroe often now from 1st to 2nd. My technique sucks, I know it, I miss shifts all the time. Join the club.
