Trying to pick up a laptop for my soon to be 12 year old son. Going to be used mainly for web, videos, social bullshit and minecraft. Got a hook on a used, but in new condition Dell. Wondering if this will be enough horsepower for what he needs. They want $300 for it...

Dell Latitude E6500
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.53GHz
4GB DDR2
160GB HDD 7200
DVDRW
Intel GMA 4500MHD
High-Definition Audio
15" Display
Windows 7 Home 32-bit

Thanks in advance.

wouldn't a hundred dollar tablet be cheaper and suffice for those requirements you listed?

if you do go with that laptop, check out the condition of the battery. a replacement battery for those old power sucking laptops will probably cost you anywhere from another $50-100 on top of that $300

I'd vote no. It's only 4GB RAM, 32bit, and wouldn't be upgradeable if you ever need to.

You can find good deals on 8GB 64bit laptops for just a little more than that and be on more current (and upgradeable) technology.

Those are decent specs for what hes going to do. You don't really need anymore unless he is playing hardcore games.

2nd. my opinion, I would either watch him, or set a lot of parental locks if he is only 12years old. You can get into a lot of trouble on social websites. Giving your number to a 50 year old man while thinking its another 12 yr old girl. etc... Plus going on boobie websites.

BTW, you can probably get that laptop for under 200 bucks.

That is overkill for what he is going to be doing with it. Your bottle neck is your internet connection and video card, not your processor, ram, or hd. Eric's ibm will be more than enough spec for what he is going to do with it. Only downside is the quality of the display.

Also keep in mind the longevity of a laptop is much less than a traditional desktop. Expect 1 to 3 years max before something goes out or he bounces it off the floor.
