Oil Change 101

Well a simple oil change combined with 2 newbie wrenchers and too big of a tool. Thats the situation that occurred in my garage earlier this week. Lupi and Ana went to do an oil change on the F4i. See the pic, yes Ana now knows how to handle a tool. :D Wouldn't have been too bad had I not had too big of a tool:D Seriously, the oil filter wrench I had didn't fit the small cycle filter. Sent Lupi to go get the proper one, but took him an hour. I ended up using the hammer and screwdriver method. Had her done b4 Lupi got back. But next time it will be no problem, they actually know what they are doing. Probably need supervision though. .!. :D .!.

you gotta get one of those craftsman tools with the plasic handle and rubber strap. That thing is one bad muther, you could get any size filter off with it, and back on!

Maybe he's being sponsored by Alpine Stars?
Maybe he's to poor to afford anything else and wears them everywhere?;)
Truth is he rode over and he generally wears the boots on every ride. But I did like the sponsor bit.

Thanks for helping me and letting me use your garage & tools, with the proper tool the next oil change should take 20 minutes, not 2 hours :laughing

Anna that you. No more Sunny D??????
Whoa- that sounded like a real goat fuck. Hope the owner of the machine trusts the liable "technician" sprawled under the bike, because it's potentially her life on the line. Confidence? Does that guy really know what he's doing if he couldn't even remove the filter without a major struggle?

Once saw a friend's oil filter come unscrewed immediately in front of me on a balls out 5th gear sweeper (Tryan Grove Road, near Spring Grove at IL/WI state line). Major smoke from hitting exhaust, oiled my faceshield, oiled the road, OILED THE REAR TIRE COMPLETELY, quickly forcing the bike off the road at high speed. Lesson learned.

My point is even something that simple can have huge consequenses on a bike. Good luck to you.
Confidence? YES. Not like it wasn't checked before I let them leave anyway.

LOL, man I'm not that bad! It was just a case of not having the proper tools for that size oil filter at the beginning of the job. Went and got the right gear, and was done in 20 minutes. And yes, Champ did go and look over everything before Anna left.

Ciao,
Lupi

goat fuck??????????? seek help fast!!!:jester
As long as this is an oil change thread, take this just as friendly advice- worth what you paid for it!

I'll never use anything but original manufacturer oil filters in my machines. Feel the $11 your bike dealer gets for a filter is outrageous compared to $3 for a car filter? Understand and accept the economies of scale involved. You'll "save" maybe $30 over the life of your bike using aftermarket oil filters- if you really want to economize, shop your insurance around or other big expenses instead. Why do I say this?

Some aftermarket filters have in the past been known to have incorrect thread pitches machined into their openings, resulting in loosening and oil loss. Also, substandard internal filtering media, manufacturing flaws, and sloppy construction have also been seen on cut open examples. Road Racing World magazine around 3 years ago reported on a Willow Springs racer who had a defective off shore produced Fram oil filter on his bike fail, resulting in serious injuries and a lawsuit. There is also the potential of voided warranty issues with aftermarket filters. Just isn't worth it, in my opinion.

Benefit from other's experiences. As always though, it's your bike, your wallet, your life of course. Wrench AND ride safe!:helmet
