Anyone know the material and guage/size of safety wire? I just got a twister and some Alum 0.04" But not thru a Bike shop or online. So the wire might not be right. But cant beat the price.

I've got it on my bike, but I didn't put it on so I'm not sure exactly what gauge or material it is. If nobody can come up with a god answer here. You could always check mine out.:thumbsup
you should be fine w/.04 - I've seen "racing" kits that sell bails of .032 and .028. FWIW, I got mine at Menards...
alum or stainless. I called DanO and he said I could get by with the Alum but generally it is preferred to have SSTL.
yeah I agree but I only have my oil filter, cap, and drainplug wired and every oilchange they get replaced so no time for rust to form.
I'd go with stainless. Aluminum needs at least twice the thickness to have the same tensile strength.

Marrietta motorsports (1-888-FASTLAP) sells can of it pretty cheap... around $8-10/can I think. They have 3 sizes.
Anyone want to split some of this safety wire crap...
So we need to wire the oil fill cap and filter?

I assume you just drill a small hole through and wire it down. Where/what exactly do you wire it to?
I ordered a can from McMaster Carr. They are one of my suppliers.

302/304 SSTL
0.024" diameter
651 Approx Ft./lb.
1/4-lb Coil
$4.50

should do it.

Granger and McMaster Carr are everybody's suppliers.

Did you use charge it to the cost center for the machine shop also.:twofinger
I've got .024, and it's pretty light duty. Some of it has actually broken after 1 day on the track. I want to get something heavier for my axle nuts and such. Marietta has 1# cans for $8-10ish. 1#looks like it could last a whole season on a full race bike, and the rest of your life for a few track days.

When you safety wire make sure you secure the wire in the OPPOSITE direction that the bolt will loosen up. To wire the oil filter get a large hose clamp and secure it to the filter, then either run the safety wire through a slot in the clamp or drill the head of the clamp bolt and then wire that. Check out this link to the WERA rulebook for good examples of how to safety wire. http://www.wera.com/pages/rulebook.htm#ch13 Also .028 and .032 are the most common sizes of wire and most racers use both depending on what and how much room you have. Maker sure you don't overtwist the wire, that will weaken it.
I teach the safety wire class for the Team Chicago School at Grattan in april, If you have any ?'s let me know.

well looks like I need to get a bit thicker wire now. :(
you should be OK. or at least not to thin.
.04" is bigger than .028
but that is Alum the 0.04 not SSTL
I have 0.24 SSTL comin in prob tommorrow

Both have similar FT/lb properties. It was recommended to go with the SSTL but I might have gone a bit thin

LOL If you order from Grainger, then you've seen what I am currently doing for a living probably! Ugh....I can't stand looking at that damned catalogue any more. heheh
