Hey guys,
I just got back to my folks place after riding through the Starved Rock roads. I was pulled over and yelled at by Conservation Police at the base of the parks downhill. Remember that all the turns at the hill are 10mph zones. I was not going very fast, maybe 20, but was leaned over real far on that downhill right hander that goes around the rock wall. Of course CP is coming up the hill and leans out his window and screams at me. Pulls a U-turn and pulls me over. He's going off about how they are sick of us sportbikes, and how they've had nothing but problems lately. He gave me a story about a lady being stopped on the other side of a turn looking at a deer in the park and a group of bikes flying around the curve, and two of the three bikes rear end the lady and put her in the hospital. He was really pissed off, but I was seriously not going that fast and i think he knew that. Luckly, he calmed down after running my info and told me that hes a rider (harley im sure) and that if I want to do mach speeds, then take it to the interstates. He gave me my stuff and let me go.
When I get home, my girlfriend tells me that some kid got into a high speed chase near Starved Rock, the kid hit about 140-150 mph and the cops stopped the chase. Supposedly the kid was tucked and when the cops shut off the chase lights he got out of his tuck and blew off the back of the bike at 130mph or so. He is dead. This happened LAST NIGHT! Needless to say, the local police departments are NOT in a welcoming mood to sportbikes.
All I'm saying is that we need to take it easy through the park. The park is really only a short distance of your ride tomorrow, but remember it's mostly 20mph down to 10mph in the turns. They are singling out sportbikes FOR SURE!!!!
Just my $0.02
P.S. Yes, when i saw him start a u-turn on those narrow roads I absolutely considered running, but I just couldn't bring myself to go throught the rest of the park balls out. There are just too many hikers and cars on the side of the road and crossing the road, and all I could picture was having someone walk out in front of me. I actually pulled into a turnoff and waited for the Cop to get there. I am almost sure that is why he let me go after checking my info out.
