ROAD RACING - Team Roberts Still Waiting
By Henny Ray Abrams
Sit and Wait 11/13/2007

Nothing much has changed for the future of Team Roberts since the final race of the year in Valencia. As he'd said in Valencia, team manager Chuck Aksland said he was hopeful of having an answer by Dec. 1.

“It’s frustrating waiting around, but there’s not a lot of choice,” he said in a phone call from the team's headquarters in Banbury, England.

Aksland said it was “kind of a complicated deal” that would involve an expansion of the current sponsorship by F1 MAX-X and MGM’s Treasure Island Hotel and Casino.

“F1 MAX-X is the group coordinating the effort,” Aksland said. “It’s F-1 MAX-X and the others who are coming under one roof as far as putting the project together.”

There will be more than one motorsports entity involved, Aksland said, but he wouldn’t reveal what they were. However, it’s likely that one of the other disciplines is NASCAR.

The 2007 MotoGP World Championship was both frustrating and disappointing for the team. Only a year removed from fighting for podiums on the Honda-powered KR211V hybrid, first Kenny, then Kurtis Roberts spent the season at the back of the pack. The weak link of the new KR212V was Honda’s V-4 motor, with both sons of team owner Kenny Roberts unhappy with the performance of the engine and electronics. Kenny was replaced by his younger brother mid-season after the pair shared the limited supply of engines and machinery for two races.

The team is hopeful of securing a pair of Ducati Desmosedici GP8s for 2008 after having been turned down by all of the Japanese factories. Honda told them they wouldn’t be able to supply engines for two riders in 2008.

“We haven’t talked in great detail” with Ducati, Aksland said. Would the team continue their tradition of building their own frame around existing engines or use complete motorcycles? “Obviously we don’t know, because we haven’t talked in great detail. It’s going to be a situation where when we have sponsors, when we have a plan, we’ll see what’s achievable. They may say we don’t have bikes, we don’t have parts. Obviously, from making parts ourselves we know there’s a lead time.”

With Ducati into their second season with 800s, Aksland is hopeful “they have parts, depending on what’s changing. We may be able to start testing right away.”

I hope they do get sponsorship and a new paint scheme. Now, the big question, will Kurtis be back on the bike? Please, oh please!

Interesting, here’s the link I see to NASCAR. NASCAR is basically the France Family. The France Family holds interest in other entities like Daytona the Grand Am Series and a relatively new series (born in 2006) Moto-ST. Moto-ST is a motorcycle racing series that is run by Rodger Edmondson who basically made the AMA series what it is today (it would probably be even bigger today if the AMA didn't try to screw Rodger a few years back - he subsequently sued them and won, to the tune of 4M, but that's another story). Anyways, I'm sure with Indy now getting a GP the France Family is eager to become involved and bring an event their way. Now the bonus would be if they could use the Moto-ST series (like Laguna has used the AMA series) as the support racing -they could spring board interest in their new series.
