OK, HELP PLZ
So, I emailed some friends a link to the pic thread from yesterdays Nesba day @ RA. One of them emails me back and says they can't access it without logging in?

Why would we keep guests from seeing the group rides, and ride reports? You'd figure that would help get lurkers to join. "Hey these guys get together a lot in my area.....or.....Wow these guys really seem to have a lot of fun on their rides, maybe I'll join up and tag along?"

It just seems like we could possibly draw more people if they could read these? I could understand why maybe not allowing access to social, but all you have to do is register and you can get to it....so anyone have a vote to open up these to guests? or is there something more complicated and that is why things are the way they are?
Ciao,
Lupi

I think it's a good idea too, as long as there's not something we're both missing here. I've often linked friends to a certain post in Ride Reports or something like that to check out pictures and I end up having to lend them a login/pw so they can see. Not a great big deal, but I don't see why not.

The reasoning is this:

Items in those forums contain information on our meeting spots, rides we have gone on, and sometimes roads we enjoy riding. Often times these rides we do are not entirely within speed limits(sometimes 5 or 10 over, right?). For this reason we have made this information available only to actual members of the site.

If for example the police took an interest in our site(hypothetical) they would be able to view all our information as a guest, and theoretically target locations were they know us to be(perhaps I am being too paranoid, but why take the chance?).

if you have any more questions please do not hesitate to PM me or other moderators of the board.

Thanks,
Chris

Bingo!!! we have a winner :D

Plus forcing them to be members allows me to track whos seeing what. Guests are annonomous. So if a certian group is watching our groups rides forum I can tell. (Hypothetically of course) :D :D

It's all about security for you guys.

First I dont care one way or the other. I agree that the security is a good thing as stated above. But in reality, if anyone can join they can watch anyway so there is a hole in the seciruty IMO. Hell I know I have checked out sites only to be told I need to join and its free. So why not I join check it out and leave.

If you want more clarification on the "workarounds" you mentioned please PM me. There are reasons for our insanity.

no i wasn't complaining just pointing out the obvious. if you have stuff behind the scenes great. but outside of PM's and code words used here I don't know what can be done. just that I see it all I think and it wasn't hard to join up to get to this point either.
