Yeah I'm so happy. My roomie had the house hardwired for SDSL yesterday, and it's all up and running. A small step up from DSL that I had, but now we don't have to rely on having a phone line that we were not using!

I think tonight I need to sit down and benchmark the DL speed for it.

Jim, I again received confirmation today that you too can get DSL. All you need to do is switch to an "854" phone number. That routes through a newer phone hub that can accept the DSL service!

what's the up/down speed and how much is it? and i don't understand the phone line not being used comment .. what's that mean?

the base pkg is 384/384....now i have no idea what lvl package the roomie got

as far as the phone line.....

DSL requires you to have an active phone line to cary the service... requiring you to pay for both DSL and phone lines....even tho hte DSL just runs on a higher frequency

by going hardwired SDSL...we eliminate the need for phone lines, and there for the need for a home phone service. and since we dont use the home phone at all really, and both have cells thats fine.

So basically we go from having two bills to one and save some money in the mean time, and have a slightly faster connection.
I believe the package is 109 a month....which is cheaper than the combo of phone/dsl

when she gets home, ill try and figure out what package she got to know the speeds to be expecting

You boys need to do some shopping around! $109.00 a month?!?! Ameriquack has it on special for 29.95 a month for DSL (basic local service is around $15) which makes a total $45.00. Down speed is 768, more likely 900 or so depending on line conditions, I am on the outer fringes (~15Kfoot) and I get around 900 on mine, who cares about up speed, 128 is plenty sufficient. Myself I would not want something that is limited at 384 for that price...you guys locked into a contract now?

By the way, I dont understand "hard wired SDSL not using any phone lines" How is that ISP getting the signal to your house? Did they trench a cable and build a CO?:jester You are on Ameritech outside plant that was wholesaled to that ISP that sold you the service. Clarifications?

It's got to be because there's lots of usage on the line then 'cause T1 is very fast compared to dial-up.

1.5/1.5...(minus overhead)...real fast. Hey Jim, sometimes those T1's need to be "reset"....go to whereever the phone lines for this comes into the building and touch your tounge to the wires going into the jack, that will "reset" them and speed things up :evil

T1 is over 1 megabit/sec. in each direction. If it's slow you either have it loaded down or are actually running a fractional T1.

Not locked in a contract, and I said 384 was base, not necessarily what we have. Roomies not home to find out what package she got.


hard wired = ie dedicated line to my house and my house only.

How they ran the line? I haven't even botherd to ask. DOn't really care wither.

Ill find out what our up/down is when she gets home...

No shit....Americrap won't even install to my house. I tried right b4 I got our DSL package, they gave me the usual Americrap song and dance, yes we can, we promise, just give us a month. INstall time, oh wait, we just found out we can't.

So I went with another DSL provider who had us hooked up in less than 5 business days. I don't know what bug Americrap had up their bum and wouldn't do it, since it still ran through their line anywho.

So now, I've got SDSL and it's been smoking. Now I need to get one of those dandy clockers to see the "real" speeds.

this is the thing that pisses me off about companies that push their DSL .. "it's a dedicated line just for you" .. like there still won't be a bottleneck at the router (or anywhere else on the network) if they don't manage it right :rolleyes

Now there you have a very good point Michale. I'll have to wait and see how reliable it is, but it should be much more robust than the plain jane DSL

I just check my wireless DLS I'm clocking in at 806 up and 764 down at the moment. And Jim I told you you can get this no matter what anyone says about your phone line. Cause you dont need a phone line.

I have an antenna on top of the house with a little square plate. There is an antenna in Crystal Lake that I have line of site too. No phone lines used up or down. Check them out at dls.net
