this got sent to me it looks more and more people are having issues with tank bags destroying paint on there tanks.

this shot was taken at DGY they have these on all there tank bags.

Do metallic paints actually have metal in them? Like, are the flakes actual metal?

I think the damage would be caused if you left the bag on there for a week at a time.

not since 1960 "i think"

in the sense they are saying it from what i am thinking:

any solid dark colors are easy to mess up its saying, and its trying to also say, even will mess up colors with metallics in them "usually anything with "flake" is a brighter tone, it will hide damage easier is sunny conditions. but apparently its being known the damage is even bad enough to see on metallics also.

yes, all paints get soft in hot sun, brittle is cold weather. paint is meant to me on top of something expanding and contracting as needed. when you sandwich or put something on top of it. everything from sun fade,crushing,denting,scratching,scuffing, etc, etc, etc. can and will happen.


cars, bikes, soft materials, hard materials, its all the same thing.

just trying to help you guys protect your paint.

also tank bags on a hot day while covering the gas cap will capture, keep the fumes,even alter the rubber or plastic on the tank bags and also react to the paint.

gas fumes,vapors are VOC= volatile organic compounds.

Most of the damage I've seen has come from people leaving dirt/grit/whatever on the tank, and then sticking their tank bag over the top. Mine has been on for weeks at a time, and about 35k miles over the last 2 years and so far the paint still looks like new. I wipe it down with a rag whenever I'm moving it around.

I bought a tank bag for my trip a while back, and found the bag did scratch a little. Having the bag was very convenient, but, I wasn't happy about the scratches.

i've not used a tank bag, but at least I have a plastic tank cover on mine.

for years and 100K or more miles...... without damage.


Follow these steps....

Before you mount the bag, clean the tank with Honda Polish ( or whatever)

Make sure the BACK of the tankbag is clean.

Do not SLIDE the tankbag on the tank, lift then reposition.


You will never have an issue.


Dirt, if trapped between the bag and the tank ...with the vibration of
the motorcycle acts like a vibrating sander and can quickly abrade
the paint and make it look bad.... Especially on a black bike.

Good advice Tom. I hate backpacks so have had to resort to tank bags. My 07 S4Rs has 20k miles, over 2 years including 2 winters on her and my paint on my plastic tank looks just fine. I use a Roadgear strap-on tank bag. The bottom is a really nice non-slip rubber and I keep it clean, and the tank was waxed once, 2 years ago. But I am carefull of dirt between the surfaces as well as fuel splash. Always wiped up.

Sorry man but this is simply not true. My tank is fucked over and out and I was nothing but careful with both my bag being clean (brand new) and the tank being clean (just waxed). It may have worked for you, but it is not a foolproof way of keeping your finish intact.

I've had my '99 Bandit 1200 since it was new (over 40k miles currently) and use a magnetic tank bag ALL the time when I commute. I've used three different ones and I've never had a problem. I would get some marks on the tank from time to time but it was nothing that couldn't be polished out.

I now have a full tank cover so I don't have to worry about keeping up with checking for swirl marks.

I think this warning tag is probably a result of a few angry people at one point in time saying the tank bag effed up their precious bikes - and now the tags are on there to cover their butts.

If everyone really worried about warning labels (you know - the ones we all remove after taking delivery of our bikes) we'd all wear helmets and proper riding gear all the time... not to mention everyone would also still have the stock exhaust installed "Off Road use only" uh huh...suuuure. :neener:
