i think another pitbull is the best choice. a male pup would do fine as long as he grew up with her. dominance would not be as big a factor as you may believe. i have had a good deal of pitbull experience. anyone without pitbull experience can only speculate, or at best make a educated guess.
That's probably the worst, most irresponsible idea in this thread. If you look at the temperment of the breed... if there was ever an unsupervised altercation they would fight to the death. Yes I'm experienced with pitbulls, not the kind of you find on the southside either.

Michelle, this is afterall.. a motorcycle website. Your best bet is to ask this question to a group of mature/responsible pit owners. At least do a search because I'm sure the question has been asked there before.

I would never put a pitbull in the same house as a Rott...you are seriously asking for trouble.

I've been showing dogs and competeing/training in competitive obedience for 25 yrs (put my first CD on a poodle when he was 10 and I was 10)...and Meech and I had a long discussion about Bella, who she is and what her temperment is like. She has a very good temperment for a pitbull, but thats because meech really works hard at soocializing her...and the second she sees even a hint of dominance, or aggressive play she ends it. Rotts themselves can be great dogs, but I think a rott would definitly push that level of dominance that Bella has to a point that it may become a problem. I personally wuld stick with something much more passive. A dog who will not challenge Bella, but understand the pecking order and repect it.

Nicole
I should have been more clear - I'm assuming that Meech would want to get a puppy, not an adult dog. And if she gets, say, a Rottweiler puppy, I don't think it would be a problem.

While I don't have the same level of experience as you do, I'm talking from experience as well. Raised a rott, had her go through several trainings, been a member of the dog clubs and all... Lots of friends with rotts, too, since my dog gave birth two times.

My take is that 99% of getting the dogs to live together depends on the training and proper socializing at young age. I've seen some aggressive and dominant ones and I've seen some shy rotts. Yes, most rotts are dominant, but it's compensated by the fact that most of them are also very laid back. I've had friends/relatives bring various dogs to our house, including very small ones like a toy terrier and very large like a great Dane and we never had a problem. Yes, it is different from having them live together but... Our neighbors had two large Rizenschnauzers, large mastiff, huge king poodle and a Great Dane. All adult, all bitches. They had some occasional quarrels, but never serious problems. The secret was that they didn't bring new adult dogs to the house - all the new dogs they bought were puppies. An adult dog with normal psyche will never intentionally hurt a puppy. And when a puppy grows up with an adult dog, typically they will get along well.

Like I said, I don't have that much experience. But I think that if Meech will get a puppy, not an adult dog, any breed is will work. With adult dogs, yes, I agree - getting a rott and pitt that haven't been raised together and having them live under the same roof is a bad idea.

Boxer's are cool dogs! That may be a REALLY good option Meech!!

Nicole
That is not an option as my friend has a boxer already so I don't want 2 boxers and a pit :)

Again, I'm just toying with this idea. Just gathering info :)

Get it neutered or it will be boinking its sibling.

Hmm, is there an Alabama version of a pitbull?

while i agree that the best place to get info is on a pitbull site. I disagree with EVERYTHING else you said. And as you can see I'm not on the south side. I have recently pulled to males into the same home. I question your experience, and resent your attempt at an insult

I had an apbt/boxer mix that got along awesome with a brittany spaniel. They chased each other all over the house and then fell asleep together. They would play fight once in a while, but never rough and nobody ever got bit.

I've grown up with pitbulls my whole life, and have been facinated with them for as long as I can remember. My male pitbull currently lives with my grandparents...Long story short - my neighbor is a whore, who made many very false complaints to my HOA and animal control, and my grandfathers DR recommend he have a dog (he has alzheimers), my pop didn't want any other dog but Tank, so it was best to let for the both of them.

ANYWAY....We always had a male and female, once 2 males, and 1 female. Never had one problem. Sure, there were fights over stupid crap, but that was stopped, and NOT allowed. They knew from day one that it would not be tolerated. IMO, if you have a male puppy who is raised with Bella they will do just fine, like any dogs, they'll have their spats, but it's all about training them correctly. I own the largest pitbull group on Yahoo, and it is an awesome group, there are some VERY reputable breeders, owners, and showers on that group. You should join and get some of their opinions if you are considering another pitbull...Many own more then one pitbull. Just go on Yahoo groups and search for pitbull groups, it is the first one on the list....APBT_LOVERS. :)

Oh and whoever said that bostons are awesome, I totally agree with that comment!! :laughing

Meech I have nothing of any value to add....I'm partial to beagles. I'm also fond of English bulldogs...and English Cocker Spaniels I have grown fond of also. Like I said nothing of value to add:redface

You have good taste Rick. My friend in South Barrington breeds some gorgeous English Cockers (they breed Dobes also) and I started helping her show them and fell in love. But they need to be brushed, and groomed...iccck. I can't own any dog I need to brush or groom...that requires work..lol

i say you go with one of those small, toy looking dogs girls walk around with in their handbags. bella can carry him around in her mouth
:lmao: OMG I just envisioned Bella with a pink backpack on carrying her new lil buddy around :lmao:

I was thinking of actually buying a sled this year and having her pull me around once it snows :jester 2 dogs = more speed

Nicole I have been thinking of adopting a English Cocker, named Jack. He's a sweetie...will play fetch all day without tiring. The grooming brings me closer to the dog...my Beagle, Pico (RIP) I would brush everyday, just to see him glow:)

Meech...PM Winn_ing_smile she use to train sled dogs, and had a dog sled team during college.

Did not read all the responses so if these three were mentioned, I am sorry for the repeat - My mom has an Aussie Shepard now and the dog is smarter than I am - Great pooch - We had a German Short Haired Pointer when I was a kid and I had a Border Collie in College - All (3) were AWESOME dogs and I would suggest any of them as a pet

In order listed - Aussie - German Pointer - Border Collie
