Abstract (Document Summary)
Ronald C. Dean, 17, pleaded guilty to murdering Policeman Albert H. Brown, 47, while he was escaping from the Shakespeare av. station July 5 and was sentenced to life in prison
Subject: Actor in Batman, Dark Knight killed a C.P.D. Officer
An actor in Batman, Dark Knight, killed a Chicago Police Officer July 1955.
If any of you go see the new Batman movie, Dark Knight, be aware that the character actor in it, Ron Dean, who plays a cop and who has made a career playing cops, shot and killed a Chicago Police Officer when he was 15 or 16.
He killed a police officer in the old station on Shakespeare Ave, the 32nd District Station at the time. I believe this occurred in July, 1955. The officer was shot with a gun taken from a drawer in the lockup.
He was a juvenile and they had no laws providing for charging juveniles as adults at the time. I find it very ironic that he has made a career of playing cops in the movies, he played opposite reallife CPD Sgt Joe K. in The Fugitive as one of the CPD Detectives who captured Harrison Ford.
I found an article years ago describing the murder and Ron Dean's part in it but Dean said he didn't want to talk about it. I don't doubt that.
Since then I do not knowingly go see any mov ie with Ron Dean in it. I couldn't find any refere nce to this today but it is true, it actually happened. The Officer Down web site does not list the name of the Officer's killer, no doubt because offender Dean was a juvenile.
Remember this if you must spend money to go see the movie.
We'd imagine that a minor actor like Dean appears to be gets a flat fee for his work, not a percentage of the gross like big names do. Still, some sins are pretty much unforgivable. We are now conflicted.

Patrolman Albert Brown was shot and killed while working the lockup at the 32nd District Station on Shakespeare Avenue.
Patrolman Brown was at the front desk when one of the prisoners was able to pick his cell lock and enter an outer office. The assailant stole a revolver from a desk drawer and as Patrolman Brown returned to the lockup area the killer attacked him and shot him in the abdomen. Although seriously wounded, Patrolman Brown continued to struggle with the assailant and regain control of the service weapon before the gunman escaped.
Patrolman Brown w as transported to a local hospital and succumbed t o the gunshot wound ten days later. He is survived by his wife and two sons.
The killer was apprehended two days later. They found him hiding at the North Avenue Beach. He served 11 years in prison (as an adult). I believe it was in Joliet Prison. That's where they used to send the younger men.
I verified this with the Chicago Tribune Archives and several senior detectives. They say it is true. Dean is police hater as well. Go figure!
