This is only in Cook County, I got this too and i almost ripped it up until i again realized this is america and not paying this tax will get you fucked, so i called around
as of march 1st 2012 cook county and only cook county from what i know issued a tax for ppl that buy and sell vehicles so they dont make non tax profits, pretty clever for all those car flippers gotta say ;] stupid ppl cant be clever enough NOT to sign over titles, but W.E

Is this Cook County Use Tax valid for purchases made in 2013 too? The form says "In November 2011, the Cook County Board of Commissioners passed the County’s fiscal year 2012 budget. Per the budget, there is a new tax, Use Tax on Non-Retailer Transfers of Motor Vehicles," but didn't specify 2013's budget, so I wonder if the tax also applies to purchases made in 2013.... on the Cook Cty website I don't see the form updated with "2013".

You'll be paying it like the rest of us. Remember , its crook county .

Please post the link you speak of.

So we have to pay over 400 fucking dollars for plates, transfer title and registration?

Jesus tap dancing christ!
Mchenry county guys - looking better each day! I wont ever complain about MCcty anymore - im so glad i moved outta that shit hole of ck county!

Yea if it says 2012, the law will be in effect in 2013, 2014....

Unless smething changes, which I doubt

On a car, sure I might be willing to pay that, but on a bike, no way
I don't like this any more than you do but, I hope you realize that if you ignore the notice and don't pay that at the County's "request" (actually it would be a circuit court order...no sweat for Cook County...they're the counties courts) the Secretary of State will suspend your drivers license and at that point you will not only have to pay the tax...possibly a penalty AND a fine, plus on top of all that it could take weeks for the SOS to reinstate your license. Will it be worth it then?
Pay the tax and then write, email AND call your Cook County Board rep and let him or her know in no uncertain terms how you feel about this tax and how it will have you voting for ANYONE but them come the next election!

Oh yea I know that, maybe bad choice of wording on my end. I'm not a fan of it, but if I ever buy another bike anytime soon, of course I'd have no choice but to pay it as long as I'm in CC

I got the same bullshit, but check this out: I live in Lake County, my seller lives in Lake County, but I transferred title at Elston Ave. Secretary of State (Cook, of course).

For that mistake I owe $175? :fuck:

This was what I was saying, the law says ''if registered in a cook county motor vehicle location'', I wonder if I can register it in lake county even if its at my cook county address and skip the fine. I mean tax.

what do you guys think of this to get around this tax in the future when buying a bike from private party:

rent a private mailbox from a place like UPS Store or Mailboxes Etc for $10-$15 for a month located OUTSIDE Cook County, it'll come with its own legit street address (don't rent a USPS P.O. Box as I heard Cook Cty might reject that because no street address), on cyberdriveillinois.com change your registration address with IL motor vehicles to that private mailbox address (easily done online, and driver's license address can stay unchanged), register your new bike using that address, have UPS Store or Mailboxes Etc set-up mail forwarding to your real home address, you'll receive paperwork in the mail, which will probably be just the new title in your name, cancel the private mailbox service, then finally go back to the cyberdrive site and change registration address back to your home address in Cook County.

I'm actually slowly looking things up now. USPS sells p.o.box for $50 a year. I don't know if they supply vanity street addresses. I didn't check UPS stores yet either.

But in theory it can/should work.

It will only work if you make the mailbox your permanant legal address and establish that address as your legal residence. It might work as a temporary dodge for awhile but, you know that they'll get wise to it and start cross referencing things like plates & city stickers, water bill payments, tax returns, property taxes...In this day & age it's so easy to do AND if they have to do that to collect their tax I'm sure they'll attach fines and penalties!...Why do you think the city sent out city sticker renewals to people who have never bought one for vehicles they've owned for years last year? They're cross referencing state plate registrations. The time has come where being a scofflaw ain't so easy!
Before you conclude that I must be some kind of advocate for the county understand that over the years I've been down these roads...I've learned the hard way that eventually you WILL be forced to pay and if you dodge it and they catch you...you can end up paying as much as 5 times what you would have if you had just paid the tax in the first place!
Believe me...I know!

EDIT: Sandman, You should not be subject to this tax. Respond to the notice and advise them of where you live and see if that resolves it. If not, at that point if it were me, I'd contact a lawyer. Don't fail to respond or you could end up with your license suspended and have to go through a bunch of hassle you shouldn't have to.

I'm doing this not just to avoid the one time fee but for my cars, I would like to avoid emissions testing as well as a city sticker. The tax they can get me for in the end but a city sticker if they don't get me that year they can't get me for back stickers. Same for the bike.

Crook county is the kind of place that will waste time and resources to go after you , but will let a gangbanger out in 4 years on murder one .

It is also the kind of place that spent $600,000 to fight a $30,000 fine it received for closing Meig's Field. It was a $1,000 a day fine for 30 days and that is all it was. No more.

If they just paid the fine that may had opened them up to more lawsuits by owners of planes stranded there.

Before you establish a rented mailbox as your legal residence you better make sure you're standing on legal ground...The only way it works is if that address appears on all of your legal documents including vehicle titles, registrations, drivers license, not to mention your passport and your tax returns...if you're a homeowner how do you do that and still qualify for the property tax break for living in the house?...You could be setting yourself up for some real legal problems if you do that...and for what...to save a few hundred dollars on taxes and fees? Compare that to what the mailbox will cost you...is it really worth it? Especially if you get caught and have to face evasion charges and all the fines and penalties? Then there's the possibility of a fraud charge if they decide you established a bogus address to defraud the City and county out of fees and taxes they are legally allowed to charge...Just sayin'!

BTW... I've been told Chicago can go back as far as 7 years to collect for unpaid city stickers.

I hear and understand where ur coming from. Some are very obvious points but some I think are borderline crazy for them to require.

Now... How can they go as far as 7 years to collect unpaid city stickers? I find that silly because a city sticker allows u to operate the vehicle in the city limits or so. What if car was just stored/broken in my garage for 5? If I don't have any tickets on said car they don't have legal proof the car was working.
